The Press Hotel in Portland, Maine (USA) was the eighth venue for the mosaic installation Victorious Secret created by visual artist Angela Lorenz in 2012-2013. This set of three triptychs, encompassing nine panels in all, is based upon actual ancient mosaics from 300 AD still in their original location in Piazza Armerina, Sicily (Italy).
These mosaics of female athletes made out of buttons are dedicated to Title IX, a law created in the United States in 1972 to address inequality in women’s university sports programs and other discrimination.
At The Press Hotel all three mosaic triptychs were hung in the hotel Art Gallery as the inaugural temporary exhibition from July 1st to August 22nd, 2016.
For this venue, graphic designer and MECA graduate Beth Taylor was commissioned by The Press Hotel to create a map indicating the cities across the Ancient Roman world where the Pentathlon took place as reported by archaeologist Isabella Baldini Lippolis.
Lorenz was present for openings during Portland’s First Friday Art Walks on July 1st and August 5th, the first night of the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio. This opportunity to exhibit the mosaics at The Press Hotel was especially poignant because it took place during international games with women competing in some of the events represented in the mosaics 2000 years earlier.
